SUMMARY STATISTIC OF VARIABILITY
Mean Absolute Deviation; Mean absolute deviation; Maximum absolute deviation
The average absolute deviation (AAD) of a data set is the average of the absolute deviations from a central point. It is a summary statistic of statistical dispersion or variability.
Least absolute deviations
  • Figure A: A set of data points with reflection symmetry and multiple least absolute deviations solutions. The “solution area” is shown in green. The vertical blue lines represent the absolute errors from the pink line to each data point. The pink line is one of infinitely many solutions within the green area.
STATISTICAL OPTIMALITY CRITERION
Least absolute deviation; Minimum absolute deviation; Minimum absolute deviations; Least-absolute-deviations regression; Sum of absolute deviations; Least absolute errors; Least absolute value; Least absolute residuals; Least absolute values; LAD regression
Least absolute deviations (LAD), also known as least absolute errors (LAE), least absolute residuals (LAR), or least absolute values (LAV), is a statistical optimality criterion and a statistical optimization technique based minimizing the sum of absolute deviations (sum of absolute residuals or sum of absolute errors) or the L1 norm of such values. It is analogous to the least squares technique, except that it is based on absolute values instead of squared values.

Absolute block signalling
  • The location of signals at signal boxes A, B and C. Up is defined as being towards C, and only signals in the Up direction are shown for clarity. Our example train will travel in the Up direction.
SIGNALLING SCHEME DESIGNED TO ENSURE THE SAFE OPERATION OF A RAILWAY BY ALLOWING ONLY ONE TRAIN TO OCCUPY A DEFINED SECTION OF TRACK (BLOCK) AT ANY TIME
Block section; Absolute Block; Block apparatus; Block instruments; Block telegraph; Absolute block; British absolute block signalling
Absolute block signalling is a British signalling scheme designed to ensure the safe operation of a railway by allowing only one train to occupy a defined section of track (block) at a time. This system is used on double or multiple lines where use of each line is assigned a direction of travel.

In mathematics, the absolute value or modulus of a real number x {\displaystyle x} , denoted | x | {\displaystyle |x|} , is the non-negative value of x {\displaystyle x} without regard to its sign. Namely, | x | = x {\displaystyle |x|=x} if x is a positive number, and | x | = x {\displaystyle |x|=-x} if x {\displaystyle x} is negative (in which case negating x {\displaystyle x} makes x {\displaystyle -x} positive), and | 0 | = 0 {\displaystyle |0|=0} . For example, the absolute value of 3 is 3, and the absolute value of −3 is also 3. The absolute value of a number may be thought of as its distance from zero.

Generalisations of the absolute value for real numbers occur in a wide variety of mathematical settings. For example, an absolute value is also defined for the complex numbers, the quaternions, ordered rings, fields and vector spaces. The absolute value is closely related to the notions of magnitude, distance, and norm in various mathematical and physical contexts.

Mean absolute difference
MEASURE OF STATISTICAL DISPERSION
Relative mean difference; Gini mean difference; Absolute mean difference; Relative mean absolute difference
The mean absolute difference (univariate) is a measure of statistical dispersion equal to the average absolute difference of two independent values drawn from a probability distribution. A related statistic is the relative mean absolute difference, which is the mean absolute difference divided by the arithmetic mean, and equal to twice the Gini coefficient.

In mathematical logic, a formula is said to be absolute to some class of structures (also called models), if it has the same truth value in each of the members of that class. One can also speak of absoluteness of a formula between two structures, if it is absolute to some class which contains both of them..

Raygor readability estimate

The Raygor estimate graph is a readability metric for English text. It was developed by Alton L. Raygor, who published it in 1977.

The US grade level is calculated by the average number of sentences and letters per hundred words. These averages are plotted onto a specific graph where the intersection of the average number of sentences and the average number of letters/word determines the reading level of the content. Note that this graph is very similar to the Fry readability formula's graph.

This graph is primarily used in secondary education to help classify teaching materials and books into their appropriate reading groups.
